The Association was formed in 1990 as the Association of Demographers of Yugoslavia, and after the breakup of the former SFR Yugoslavia and later the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia changed its name to the Association of Demographers of Serbia (abbreviated as DDS – Društvo Demografa Srbije). At the beginning of 2009, DDS had 109 members and 97 members who had student status. Almost a fifth of its members are from abroad (BiH, France, Greece …).
Since 1990, DDS has been a co-publisher of one of the world’s oldest demographic journals – Stanovništvo (published by the Center for Demographic Research of the Institute of Social Sciences since 1963), and from 2001 to 2023 of the Bulletin Demografski pregled (together with the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy and the Center for Demographic Research of the Institute of Social Sciences).
In 2005, the DDS co-organized the International Scientific Conference “Migrations, Crises and Recent Conflicts in the Balkans” (85 participants from 18 countries).
Since 2016, DDS has been the organizer of a regular regional meeting of demographers, which gathers the most eminent population science researchers from the region of Yugoslavia every four years.
